Sweet Valley Special Addition

Chapter 1

Elizabeth woke with a start, brushing her damp sun streaked hair out of her face. What a ridiculous nightmare! she mused. She felt shaken to her core. Her nightmare had felt so realistic! In it, her identical twin sister, younger by 4 minutes, was married to her ex- boyfriend from high school Todd Wilkins. Not only that, but Elizabeth herself had been in a long term relationship with, of all people, Bruce Patman! Everything had been so strange in her dream. None of it made any sense.

Next to her, she felt her husband stirring. “What’s the matter, Liz? Is everything okay?” asked Roger Collins. “You were thrashing around and moaning” he said, his blue eyes filled with concern.

“I’m okay, it was just a crazy nightmare” started Elizabeth, “Jess and I were around the same age as we are now but we were fighting over Todd Wilkins and everyone else in Sweet Valley were leading these bizarre and unbelievable lives! Lila was married to Ken, Enid turned into an arrogant doctor and….Winston…was DEAD!” Elizabeth finished with a choked sob.

Roger Collins wrapped his arms around his wife of 10 years. “It’s okay, it was just a bad dream. I wonder what it all means? Do you need to talk about it? Sounds pretty scary”.

Elizabeth looked at Roger gratefully. She still couldn’t believe that they had reconnected after she finished college at a writing seminar and ended up first as friends, and then eventually as partners. When they had gotten married years ago- she couldn’t have been happier, despite the 10 year age difference. Despite being an older man, Roger was still as handsome as he had been when he had been her favorite teacher in high school. He resembled a younger Robert Redford, with strawberry blond hair and clear blue eyes filled with wisdom. Elizabeth felt lucky that she had reconnected with her old teacher as an adult novelist and after spending time as friends, their relationship had slowly grown to something more.

“I’ve been having so many disturbing dreams lately!” Elizabeth continued, “Maybe it’s the nerves over the class reunion coming up that are causing them?” Elizabeth remarked sleepily. “Maybe it’s that I haven’t seen Jessica in so long?”

Elizabeth hadn’t seen her identical twin in over a year due to an argument they’d had over Jessica’s whirlwind romances. Elizabeth and Jessica still looked like carbon copies from the outside, with sun streaked blond hair, aquamarine eyes and athletic 5’6” size 6 frames- but everyone who knew them knew that the twins were vastly different in personality.

While Elizabeth had finished college with a degree in creative writing and gone on to author several critically acclaimed novels, Jessica had dropped out of college her junior year to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. And while Elizabeth had settled down and married Roger years ago, and became a mother to Rogers son Teddy, she and Roger had also had a baby of their own. A baby girl named Samantha- or Sam for short- who was now nearly 12 years old and swiftly becoming a “tween”- and behaving an awful lot like her flighty aunt, Elizabeth mused.

Jessica had married and divorced three times in the same 12 years. She insisted that there were just too many men out there to be able to commit to one forever. Her marriages had mostly ended either due to Jessica’s first love- her career or because Jessica did not wish to have children yet. “I’m just not ready, Liz! I have plenty of time still! I’m only 35! Women are having babies later and later. Besides, my big break is just around the corner, I know it!”

Jessica’s “big break” was always around the corner, Elizabeth thought. Although Jessica had been in plenty of lower budget movies and had even won an independent movie award once, she dreamed of being cast as the leading lady in a big Hollywood production with A list celebrities.

Elizabeth preferred a more subdued lifestyle- preferring to spend time with her husband and children when she wasn’t teaching creative writing at nearby Sweet Valley University or going on publicity tours for her best selling novels. Unlike Jessica- she had settled into a gratifying routine with one man while Jessica seemed determined that she would eventually marry a man who would help her get to the A List.

She had even gone after poor Winston after he won the lottery a year ago, despite his being in a long term relationship with Amy Sutton. Now there’s a girl who changed! Elizabeth realized. Amy Sutton used to be the most snobby girl in school- surpassing even Jessica in the boy crazy department. However, after high school, Amy had ended up getting her degree in social work and the career had softened her attitude substantially. She had also been married to a man who deserted her and her young child while Winston had been there to help pick up the pieces. Amy had realized that status and looks weren’t the most important things at all in real life and had fallen in love with Winston. They had been together for years, even before Winston’s amazing lottery win that made him a millionaire overnight. Jessica’s brazen attempt to steal him from Amy once he won the lottery was too much for Elizabeth and after being chastised- Jessica marched out saying “You may be older big sister, but you are not my keeper anymore!!” And Elizabeth had barely spoken to her since.

Chapter 2

As a member of the Sweet Valley High Class Reunion Committee, Elizabeth had been working on arranging the next big event for her graduating class from high school. In fact, they had a meeting that morning.

Roger stayed home with the kids while Elizabeth met with the other committee members at Casey’s. “Well, what do you all think of inviting some of the seniors and sophomores, even though they’re not technically part of our class?” Elizabeth proposed. Enid Rollins, Winston Egbert, Amy Sutton and Ken Matthews regarded her thoughtfully.

“I think that’s a great idea, Liz!” Enid said, “why shouldn’t we invite them and who cares about technicalities anyways?” Enid had graduated from SVU the same year as Elizabeth but unlike Elizabeth, Enid had totally transformed her image from “Elizabeth’s drippy sidekick” to Sorority President and had later gone on to graduate school on the east coast- achieving a masters degree and her PhD in public health.

The only constants in my life have been reading, writing and a passion for social justice. I am a nurse, a single mother, a domestic abuse survivor, radical feminist and outspoken advocate for logic, public health, gray areas, and purposeful dialogue. I know entirely too much about sociopaths, autism, and medieval British history. I write under a pen name to protect the privacy of my family.
